“How do you top the excitement and thrills of a week-long Festival of Reading? By introducing a clutch of eggs into School and Nursery, and watching them hatch into fluffy, yellow chicks!

“The weather may have turned chillier this week, but the eggs in our incubators, as provided by The Happy Chick Company, have been kept at a cosy 37°C, the optimum temperature for hatching healthy and happy chicks. The first chicks emerged from their shells on Thursday morning and by the time the children arrived in their classrooms this morning, the incubators were full of healthy, chirping friends. As well as an incubator, each year group has a temporary nest box, in which the chicks have now been re-homed and where they will be cared for by the children and their teachers. The chicks have provided a variety of learning opportunities for the children this week.

“In non-chick related news, Year 2 enjoyed a (slightly soggy!) day of learning and culture in Cambridge on Thursday, as they visited the Fitzwilliam Museum and the Museum of Zoology. The children discovered how one can ‘best appreciate’ Art, and then moved onto learning about animal habitats, lifecycles and ecosystems.

“In Nursery, the children’s focus has been on Spring, as we approach the first days of the new season (despite the snowy weather today!). The signs of new blooms in the Nursery allotment has inspired learning and discussion about the changing of seasons and weather. On Wednesday, we all took part in a range of activities for World Maths Day. The focus of the studies was natural Mathematics, with a host of different activities using organic resources. We have also been joined by Lucy Thew, who visited us for her work experience week. Lucy has been a huge help in the classrooms, and we thank her for all her assistance.

“My best wishes to you all for a happy weekend.”
