“IT has been a pleasure to welcome both Year 8 and Year 9 parents into school in the last week. At both events, I have referred to the advice the grandmother of Sir Chris Hoy gave him: “It is not just about the winning”.

“The 5x Olympic Gold medallist strongly believed that as a professional athlete he needed to enjoy the day-to-day training and the routine of hard work, regardless of how successful he became. For him, this was more important than the end goal. A gold medal was the “icing on the cake”. But at the same time, he also believed that enjoyment would lead to the best possible performance.

“Academic rigour is at the heart of what we do, but this is enhanced if pupils enjoy the journey along the way.
