Our A Level Classical Civilisation students were in their element exploring London’s British Museum!

The trip on March 2nd was a wonderful opportunity for Years 12 and 13 students to experience, first hand, some of the brilliant treasures of the Ancient World, including set works for the A Level examination on Ancient Greek art, and architectural sculpture from the sixth, fifth and fourth centuries BC.

Elisabeth Tyrrell, Head of Classics at King’s Ely Senior, said: “Sometimes images in textbooks and online just cannot do these amazing ancient works of art justice, and so the students were bowled over being able to see the Greek art up close and personal.

“Highlights included seeing the Parthenon marbles, the frieze from the Temple of Apollo at Bassae, and the Sophilos dinos vase, although there was much debate over whether the British Museum should return the Parthenon marbles to Athens or not.

“Year 12 students were particularly impressive with their discussion of freestanding sculpture from the sixth and fifth centuries, whilst Year 13 students took the lead in teaching the Year 12s about the architectural sculpture, providing their expert opinions and impressing many tourists along the way.

“Students behaved admirably from start to finish and were a true credit to the school. A huge thanks goes to Dr Knox who accompanied us on the trip.”
