KING’S Ely’s Year 13 Chemistry students visited Mundipharma at the Cambridge Science Park on December 5th.

Mundipharma manufactures various different medicines and the students got the chance to see these made first-hand on the production line.

Teacher of Chemistry at King’s Ely Senior, Scott Mathie, said: “Before being allowed anywhere near the factory, everyone was suited and booted in line with the strict good manufacturing practice guidelines. Students saw the whole process from mixing the bulk raw materials, all the way through to the impressive, fully-automated packaging line.

“We also had a tour of the quality-control labs, where the students were introduced to some sophisticated analytical techniques, including High Pressure Liquid Chromatography. The morning ended with some insightful career advice in Pharmaceuticals, in particular, the opportunities arising from a Chemistry degree with a year in industry. The students left with the correct dosage of information for a job in Life Sciences!”
