Leo to study History at University College London (UCL)

August 2025

Leo will be studying History at University College London (UCL) after achieving the A-Level grades he needed.

Leo joined King's Ely Acremont Nursery in 2009. He studied History, Maths, and Physics at A-Level, as well as AS Further Maths and an Extended Project Qualification, titled: ‘The Reforming Minister: An Analysis of Pitt the Younger’s stance on reform during his First Ministry, 1783-1801’.

When asked what he plans to do career wise, Leo said: "I am undecided, but I am currently targeting a career in either Law or Consulting."

To describe King's in three words, Leo chose "community, opportunity, collaboration".

From Ely Scheme leadership to STEM enrichment opportunities, Leo was heavily involved in our co-curricular and extra-curricular programmes alongside his studies.

He said: "For several years, I was involved with the Rowing Programme before transferring to Ely Scheme as a Pupil Instructor. I particularly enjoyed leading weekly sessions with students in Year 9, covering activities from pioneering and raft building to first aid and problem-solving.

"This year, I was fortunate enough to serve as Wilkinson’s Head of House. This was an incredibly rewarding opportunity, and I relished the chance to act as a mentor to the younger students in House. In this regard, a particular highlight must be our House Unison performance which will surely either go down in legend or infamy depending on who you ask!

"In Sixth Form, I was a King’s Scholar and a Prefect, serving on the Pupil Voice Committee in the latter role. It was great to represent the student body in this way and represent their interests to the SLT. Throughout Senior School, I was also the recipient of both a STEM Scholarship and an Academic Scholarship.

"Other activities I was involved in during my time at King’s include: Historical Debating, Model United Nations, Clay Pigeon Shooting, Rifle Shooting, Tennis, ‘QUACK’ Quizzing Club, Fen Brainage, Clark Rooney, Music Ensembles, and the F24 Greenpower racing team. This goes to show just how much is on offer at King’s!"

When asked to describe the teaching and learning environment at King's, Leo said: "The style of teaching is open and supportive. Extra thanks ought to go to Mr Currie, who supported me both in class and through my super-curriculars, particularly in supporting me through the University application process and helping me craft my entry to the Julia Wood History Essay Competition, in which I was highly commended. An ‘Other’ Club and History Café were real highlights of my King’s Ely Senior experience."

Describing what he will miss most about King's, Leo said: "Quite simply, the community. Having been at King’s for so long, I have spent virtually my entire life with these people so seeing them less frequently will of course be a major adjustment. I think the highlight of my time at King’s has to be the range of activities I have participated in over the years. King’s has a truly unique offering, catering to each pupil individually while caring for them in the wider context. It is hard to imagine a happier and more open school. I found the fusion of both history and modernity within a genuine community to be a phenomenon entirely unique to King’s."

Congratulations Leo - enjoy London and keep in touch!
