We were delighted to welcome historical reenactor, Nigel Amies, to King's Ely Prep to lead a fun and fact-packed Roman Morning with our Year 6 pupils!
Dressed in the uniform of a Roman soldier, Nigel captivated students as he spoke to them about Roman life, and how it differed from the preceding Celtic civilisation.
Mr Edward Davis, Head of History at King's Ely Prep, said: "Our reenactor explained the uniform and equipment of a Roman legionary. He also talked about the different weapons a soldier would have. He discussed the Roman invasion of Britain. He then explained who could join the Roman army and the life they would lead. The pupils also tried some Roman drill manoeuvres.
"We had the opportunity to see reproductions of numerous objects and clothes used by the Romans. The pupils were even taught about Roman toilets. They were revolted at the thought of using a communal sponge on a stick. However, this was better than the facilities in Celtic times!"
Workshops, trips, and experiences like this are organised throughout the year at King's to enrich and augment what our pupils are taught in the classroom. What a fun way to bring their studies on Celtic and Roman Britain to life!
