Diligent King’s Ely students are celebrating some stellar GCSE results, with more than a quarter of all grades achieved being the top 9s and 8s, equivalent to the old A*.

Around half of King’s Ely’s GCSE results this year are Grades 9-7, and well over 80% are Grades 9-5. Virtually all students achieved a pass or better in Maths and English Language.

Two students achieved eleven Grade 9s, with a further eleven pupils attaining at least five Grade 9s. Nearly a third of pupils achieved all Grades 9-7 in at least seven of their subjects.

These superb results not only reflect our students’ hard work and determination, but also their teachers’ and mentors’ expertise and commitment for them to succeed. They also come just a week after 92% of King’s Ely’s Year 13 cohort achieved an immediate place at their first-choice university or institution. This year, almost one fifth of all A-Level results achieved by King’s Ely Sixth Form students were the top A* grade. Around half of all grades attained were A*-A, and almost three quarters of results were grades A*-B. The overall pass rate was 99.5%

Mrs Jane Thomas, incoming Head of King’s Ely Senior, said: “GCSE Results Day marks a key milestone in any young person’s educational journey, and we are very proud of all of them. Behind every grade lies hours and hours of hard work, dedication, and commitment from pupils and their teachers. Many pupils have exceeded their expectations alongside having contributed to many aspects of school life. In a set of GCSEs, some subjects will have been a challenge whilst in others, pupils will have developed a genuine interest that they will take with them and develop in Sixth Form.”

As is reflective of an all-round, enriched education, King’s Ely pupils have studied and achieved in a wide variety of GCSE subjects. More than one third of all grades in the following subjects were at least a Grade 8 – Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Fine Art, Further Maths, History, Latin, Maths, Music, Photography, Physics, Religious Studies, Russian, and Textiles.

For the first time, some pupils in Year 10 also completed the Higher Project Qualification alongside studying for their GCSEs, all achieving A* or A. Two pupils also completed the Extended Project Qualification, equivalent to half an A-level, in Year 10 achieving A* grades, which is particularly impressive 

Oliver Loveday achieved all Grades 9-7, and he is going to be studying Biology, Maths, and Economics for his A-Levels at King’s Ely Sixth Form. Oliver, who has been at King’s Ely since joining Nursery in 2012, said: “I am very happy with my GCSE results, and also very relieved. I love the environment here at King’s, and I am looking forward to studying subjects that I enjoy in more depth.”

Nicole Hobbs, who joined King’s Ely Prep in Year 3, passed all her GCSEs, including a Grade 8 in English Literature. Nicole is going to be studying English Literature, Classical Civilisation, and Religious Studies at A-Level. She said: “I am so pleased with my results! I kept refreshing the log-in button this morning, which was quite stressful, but it is a great feeling to now know what my results are. I think I would like to study Law at University, although that is not set in stone. I am excited to study in the Old Palace here at King’s. I am looking forward to the environment, more freedom, and I like the fact I already know most of my teachers well.”

Augustine Hui, who joined King’s Ely Prep in Year 8, achieved an incredible eleven Grade 9s. Augustine, who will be studying Chemistry, History, and Double Maths at A-Level, said: “I studied hard and revised lots, but I never thought I would get all Grade 9s! I am pleasantly surprised and proud of myself.”

Identical twins, James and Matthew Allen, did not achieve identical GCSE results, but they were very similar! James achieved all Grades 9-6 and Matthew attained all Grades 9-5. James is studying History, Religious Studies, and Music at A-Level. Matthew is studying History, Religious Studies, and Economics for his A-Levels. The siblings are both going to be King’s Ely Sixth Form and Ely Cathedral Choral Scholars next year, following in their older brother Thomas’ footsteps.

Twenty-five pupils from all corners of the globe also received their results today having studied the one-year IGCSE programme at King’s Ely. The two-term intensive course sees young people studying in their non-native speaking language, and the average number of subjects taken is six. King’s Ely is delighted to report another excellent set of IGCSE grades, with an overall pass rate of 90% and a 100% pass rate in Maths. Almost half of all IGCSE results this year were Grades 9-7. Three students achieved Grades 9-7 in all their subjects.

Mr Matthew Norbury, Director for International Students at King’s Ely, said: “Our IGCSE students arrive in England for the first time ever in September, and just seven months later they are successfully sitting their IGCSEs in an education system they have never experienced before. Every year I remain humbled by and proud of their achievements.”
