September 2025
Your full name:
Christopher Finch
Where did you grow up?
Not too far from here, in Northamptonshire, where my parents still live.
Education:
I studied for my Music degree at the University of Birmingham and subsequently did a Masters degree in choral conducting at the University of York. My singing and piano studies were undertaken privately with professors at the Royal College of Music and Birmingham Conservatoire.
Your previous role and place of work:
I was Head of Vocal and Choral Studies at Wells Cathedral School for eleven years.
What are you most looking forward to about your new role and working at King’s Ely?
Building on Peter North’s tremendous legacy here, and helping to grow the quality and profile of singing in all sections of the school.
What did you want to be when you were growing up?
A lawyer – but my heart was always in Music.
Hobbies/interests outside of school:
I love watching Rugby, having been a very keen player during my youth as a part of the Northampton Saints Development Squad. I also love going to the theatre and travelling around the world as much as possible. I have been lucky that my professional career has taken me to incredible places like China, USA, and Iceland.
Any pets?
We have a 4-year-old Cockapoo – suitably named Finzi, after the great British composer.
What is your favourite meal/food?
I have a bit of a sweet tooth and love a classic British pudding – anything smothered in custard will do. I am very well catered for by the excellent food at King's!
If you could have a superpower, what would it be?
Teleportation - a chance to see the world without all the wasted time spent travelling.
Who is your hero?
As a conductor, I idolise Simon Rattle, but I always wanted to be Jonny Wilkinson.
What is your proudest accomplishment?
My choirs have won competitions around the world. To see the singers work so hard and achieve something truly world-class is both humbling and inspiring.
What was the last book you read?
John Eliot Gardiner - 'Bach: Music in the Castle of Heaven'.
What song are you most likely to sing at a karaoke?
One of the Motown classics.
What is your favourite film?
'Good Will Hunting'.
Do you have any phobias or fears?
I am really scared of snakes, which my daughter teases me about constantly!
If you could share a meal with any four individuals, living or dead, who would they be?
The truthful answer would be dearly departed family members.
Name three things that you would want with you if you were stranded on a desert island for a week:
A private chef, a well stocked wine cellar, and a comfy bed - is that cheating?!
