Five Minutes With... Mrs Lucy Coghlan, Teacher of Maths at King's Ely from September 2025

October 2025

Your full name:

Lucy Coghlan

Where did you grow up?

In Ely.

Education:

I was a student at King’s Ely! I then studied Music at the University of Huddersfield before doing my PGCE Secondary Maths at GITEP/University of Bristol.

Your previous role and place of work:

I was a Teacher of Maths at Cambourne Village College.

What are you most looking forward to about your new role and working at King’s Ely?

I am looking forward to working with the amazing staff and students here at King’s. I am also looking forward to watching the brilliant concerts and productions!

What did you want to be when you were growing up?

Either a Teacher (Maths or Music), or a Percussionist in pit bands for musical theatre.

Hobbies/interests outside of school:

I love playing percussion and saxophone in bands or orchestras. I am also an avid baker, and I really enjoy playing board games and doing escape rooms. I do love going to watch theatre productions, however I do not go as much as I would like.

Any pets?

I have a one-year-old Golden Retriever called Jack.

What is your favourite meal/food?

Steak and chips with chimichurri sauce.

If you could have a superpower, what would it be?

Flying. I hate flying in planes but maybe I would like flying without one!

Who is your hero?

Evelyn Glennie, a Scottish percussionist who is deaf.

What is your proudest accomplishment?

Completing my Music degree despite the disruption of COVID.

What was the last book you read?

'Mythos' by Stephen Fry.

What song are you most likely to sing at a karaoke?

'Sweet Caroline'. People cannot resist joining in so I would not be singing alone!

What is your favourite film?

'God’s Not Dead'.

Do you have any phobias or fears?

Spiders!

If you could share a meal with any four individuals, living or dead, who would they be?

Alan Rickman, Emma Thompson, Robin Williams, and David Attenborough.

Name three things that you would want with you if you were stranded on a desert island for a week:

Suncream (I burn very easily!), a good book, and a hammock.
