Allison to study Medicine at University of Manchester

August 2025

Allison will be studying Medicine at the University of Manchester after achieving the A-Level grades she needed.

Allison joined our international programme in Year 11 from a school in Taiwan. She studied Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Psychology at A-Level. Allison also completed an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), entitled ‘To what extent is monoclonal antibody treatment an effective treatment for lung cancer?’.

When asked what she plans to do career wise, Allison said: "I hope to one day work as a Doctor in the NHS. I am not entirely sure what specialty I would like to pursue yet, but at the moment, I am interested in oncology, psychiatry, neurology, and/or research."

Allison says that she felt "very well supported" during her three years at King's. She said: "The boarding house staff were always supportive and nurturing, especially in helping me to settle in when I first arrived. What stood out to me was how all of the staff made an effort to get to know me on a personal level, and helped me navigate challenges in both my academic and personal life. For example, Year 13 was the most mentally challenging for me due to handling my medical school application decisions, but the unwavering support and encouragement given by the House staff and my teachers gave me the strength to overcome these challenges and stay motivated."

Allison was appointed an International Scholar and a School Prefect. Outside the classroom, she was heavily involved in our Music Department, playing the violin in our string orchestra, and other musical groups. Allison also enjoyed attending our Avicenna Club for budding medics and vets, and Chemistry Olympiad Club.

Describing the teaching and learning environment at King's, Allison said: "Lessons are engaging and interactive, and teachers are highly dedicated in supporting the needs of each individual student. My teachers were always happy to give me additional support outside of regular lessons when needed, especially before exams. I also liked how teachers encouraged us to explore our subjects beyond the syllabus, such as by letting us participate in academic competitions and giving us wider reading material. Teachers are not just focused on helping students get good grades, they also support the personal development of students. In my three years at King's, I grew so much as a person thanks to these experiences."

When asked to describe King's in three words, Allison chose "supportive, uplifting, empowering".

Allison said: "I will miss the people at King’s the most. I built many wonderful friendships with people with whom I also shared countless happy memories and unforgettable experiences. I really enjoyed the fun House activities organised by the Housemistresses, such as punting in Cambridge, ice skating, and the bowling trip at the end of Year 13! King’s is a warm and friendly school that is filled with many wonderful experiences, and not just an academic hothouse. For these reasons, I greatly enjoyed my time at King’s."

Congratulations Allison - enjoy Manchester and keep in touch!
