King's Ely hosts Cambridgeshire Schools Cross Country Championships

January 2026

We were delighted to host the Cambridgeshire Schools Cross Country Championships - and that seven of our students qualified for the next round!

School athletes from across the county came together at King's for the event on January 10th, organised and hosted by Miss Michelle Bird, our Head of Athletic Development, Athletics, and Cross Country.

King's was represented by thirty-five Prep and Senior pupils, who all competed for Ely District. This also meant a special change of colours for the day, as our usual duck-egg blue was swapped for the Ely District purple vest – worn with great pride by all.

Miss Bird said: "Every single athlete should be congratulated for their commitment, determination, and sportsmanship.

"We are delighted that the following King's students have been selected to represent Cambridgeshire in the next stage of the competition: Finan Shortland, Poppy Smith, Hayden Shaw, Henry Cartmell, India Mace, Olivia D’Souza, and Stephanie Birkwood. These students will compete at Abington Park in Northampton at the end of the month, and we wish them the very best of luck as they represent both the county and King’s.

"A huge thank you to our Grounds Team, who worked incredibly hard to ensure that the course was ready, despite the recent poor weather conditions. Their efforts played a vital role in the success of the event.

"It was wonderful to see so many pupils taking part, supported by families and spectators who all created a really positive and encouraging atmosphere. Well done to everyone involved in making the Championships such a memorable day!"

In a post on the Cambridgeshire Schools Athletics Association's Facebook page, a spokesperson said: "A heartfelt thank you to everyone who helped make the event a success. We are so grateful to all the marshals and volunteers who supported on the day, to the district team managers for their hard work, and to King's Ely and Michelle Bird for their incredible effort and support in hosting the event."

Congratulations again to all runners who qualified for the next round of the competition!
