Five Minutes With... Mrs Carole Devine, Teacher of Physics at King's Ely from September 2025

September 2025

Your full name:

Carole Jayne Devine

Where did you grow up?

In sunny South Leicestershire.

Education:

Lutterworth Grammar School
Welbeck Defence Sixth Form College
Loughborough University - I studied Aeronautical Engineering, followed by a PGCE to launch into Teaching.

Your previous role and place of work:

Teacher of Chemistry and Physics at Pocklington School in York.

What are you most looking forward to about your new role and working at King’s Ely?

Joining a school that genuinely celebrates every kind of student success - whether it is in the lab, on the stage, or up a climbing wall.

What did you want to be when you were growing up?

An astronaut.

Hobbies/interests outside of school:

Anything that gets the adrenaline going! Rock climbing, skiing and snowboarding, hiking in the mountains, camping under the stars. I am also partial to a good movie, a great meal, and a spontaneous travel adventure.

Any pets?

Yes - a massive Bulgarian rescue dog, named Heimdall.

What is your favourite meal/food?

Thai food, hands down! We lived in Thailand for two years and the flavours are unforgettable - spicy, fresh, and full of soul.

If you could have a superpower, what would it be?

Teleportation - I would be in Belfast for an Ulster fry for breakfast, pop to Thailand for lunch, and be back in time for period 5.

Who is your hero?

Valentina Tereshkova - the first woman in space.

What is your proudest accomplishment?

My family. I had two babies during the pandemic, whilst living abroad, and it was definitely a very difficult time. There were so many positives, like my husband and I both being at home for their first few months, however being in a non English speaking environment brought lots of challenges. My children have grown into the coolest, kindest little people now, and having so much time together at the start of their lives was a privilege! I am also proud to have completed the Edinburgh Marathon.

What was the last book you read?

'The Thursday Murder Club' by Richard Osman.

What song are you most likely to sing at a karaoke?

Westlife - 'You Raise Me Up'.

What is your favourite film?

Titanic.

Do you have any phobias or fears?

None!

If you could share a meal with any four individuals, living or dead, who would they be?

David Attenborough - for stories that span continents and centuries.
Queen Elizabeth II - for the banter with David!
Amelia Earhart - aviation legend and fearless trailblazer.
Eddie the Eagle - the ultimate underdog. Self-taught ski jumper with heart and humour.

Name three things that you would want with you if you were stranded on a desert island for a week:

Solar-powered smoothie maker - tropical fruit deserves tropical flair.
Multi-tool - for mango slicing and predator fending.
Tarpaulin sheet - rainwater collector, shelter, and possibly a makeshift hammock.
