IN Art, our Year 1 King’s Ely Acremont Pre-Prep pupils have been inspired by Russian painter and art theorist, Wassily Kandinsky.
The children studied several of his famous abstract paintings, looking carefully at colour and shape. They learned how Kandinsky loved to listen to music when creating his masterpieces and decided they wanted to try this out for themselves.
They listened to two contrasting pieces: ‘The Ride of the Valkyries’ by Richard Wagner and ‘The Swan’ from The Carnival of the Animals by Camille Saint-Saëns. The children used the emotions they felt when listening to each piece of music to influence their choice of watercolour paint colour, the speed and size of their brush strokes, and the shapes and forms created.
It was fascinating to see how the style of music affected the children’s approach when painting. We had some delightfully creative interpretations!
