KING’S Ely was delighted to welcome Tim Jones, Heritage Coordinator for Worcestershire County Cricket Club, along to the school’s Act of Remembrance on November 9th.

Tim was contacted by Mr Marshall, the first Deputy Head of King’s Ely Junior, for information about one of the club’s former players – record holder William Beaumont Burns – who lost his life during the First World War.

Burns, who was a pupil at King’s Ely, remains the only Worcestershire player to have scored a century and taken a hat-trick in the same game. He was one of 27 Old Eleans who lost their lives in the conflict and was honoured at the school’s Act Of Remembrance Service at Ely Cathedral.

Tim attended the service and, thanks to the efforts of current Worcestershire CEO Matt Rawnsley, was able to present the Principal of King’s Ely, Mrs Sue Freestone, with Burns’ Worcestershire CCC colours tie – number 046.
