Our Year One King’s Ely Acremont Pre-Prep pupils had a fabulous time at the Farmland Museum and Denny Abbey yesterday (May 3rd).

Not only was their trip blessed with glorious sunshine, but the children had the whole site pretty much to themselves for their ‘Farming in the Fens’ activity day.

Our Year One Teachers, Mrs Monk and Mrs Johnson, said: “We split into groups to rotate around five workshops during the day – it was certainly an action-packed visit!

“In the ‘Seed to Shelf’ workshop, we learnt about the process of making bread before tractors existed to help farmers. We were amazed at how large and heavy their tools were, and how long the process would have taken! Then we had our own turn at planting some crops, as we each planted some radish seeds.

“We were delighted to bring our plant pots home at the end of the day and will hopefully see some emerging shoots very soon!

“After a packed lunch in the sunshine with friends where we exchanged the morning’s facts and experiences with each other, we continued to explore the Farmland Museum. We enjoyed investigating the old ploughs and the tractors, before exploring the dairy and the shop. A particular highlight was milking the cow at the dairy! Finally, we explored Denny Abbey itself and completed a Time Detectives challenge to help us discover more about the history of the building.

“Year One impressed all the volunteers and staff with their enthusiasm, interest, and excellent behaviour. What a super day we all had!”
