THE Speaker of the House of Commons, Rt Hon John Bercow MP spoke to King’s Ely Senior students about his role in the House this week as part of the school’s enrichment programme.

The Speaker is responsible for maintaining order during House debate and remains strictly non-partisan. An accomplished orator, Mr Bercow spoke to students during Senior assembly and held a workshop for A Level Government and Politics, Economics and History students, answering questions about the role of the media, human rights, Prime Minister’s Question Time and Scottish independence.

“Managing his responses while retaining his impartiality was certainly a feat,” commented student Jack Spoor, adding: “For those present it was an honour and privilege to spend nearly an hour with such an important guest. He greatly impressed both staff and pupils, possibly inspiring a new generation of politicians.”

Sue Freestone, Principal at the school, said: “We were honoured to welcome Mr Speaker to King’s Ely and he impressed and delighted in equal measure with anecdotes of parliamentary affairs and impressions of fellow MPs coupled with a humbling talent for public speaking.”
