KING’S Ely Junior’s star athlete, Rebecca Daniel, broke another record in the Under 14 800m at the East Anglian Prep Schools Athletics Championships at Bedford International Stadium. The victory secures her place at the Nationals in Birmingham in July.

Head of Athletics, Richard Powell, commented: “Rebecca ran an excellent tactical race against another strong runner, keeping in second place until the final 120 metres and then pulling away to win comfortably. She also stands a good chance of becoming the first ever King’s Ely pupil to win back-to-back gold medals at the Nationals, which would be a fantastic feat.”

Rebecca will be joined by two Under 12 athletes: Ben Marshall and Billy McGrath. Ben finished second in the hurdles and is improving all the time, while Billy deserved his second place position in the discus after some dedicated training throughout the term.

Richard added: “If both boys can improve further over the next couple of weeks, they should do well at the Nationals.”

King’s Ely Junior boasted a host of impressive performances from 16 athletes competing against students from over 50 schools, with many achieving personal bests.
