OLIVER Hancock, Assistant Organist to Ely Cathedral Girls’ Choir is to move to Portsmouth at the end of the academic year.

He has been appointed Sub-Organist at Portsmouth Cathedral and School Organist at The Portsmouth Grammar School in a shared full-time role from September.

Organist and Master of Choristers at Portsmouth Cathedral is David Price who was previously Assistant Organist of Ely Cathedral. In 2007 Portsmouth University conferred him with an Honorary Doctorate of Music in recognition of his significant contribution to the development of music at the cathedral and for his contribution to the cultural life of the city.

Oliver said: “I have thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of my work in Ely over the past three years, especially rehearsing with and playing for the Girls’ Choir and my involvement with the work of the Music Department at King’s. Now I am very much looking forward to working with David and the rest of the Music staff at the Cathedral and Portsmouth Grammar School and reinforcing the Ely-Portsmouth connection.”

Graduate Organ Scholar at Selwyn College, Cambridge, 25-year-old Oliver studied Music at the University of Oxford where he was Organ Scholar at Jesus College and gained a BA Hons. Last year he was awarded a MMus in Choral Studies at the University of Cambridge.

His successor is Alex Berry, currently Senior Organ Scholar at Queens’College, Cambridge. He was previously Organ Scholar at Guildford Cathedral.
