KING’S Ely may have another Olympic athlete to follow in the footsteps of javelin thrower Goldie Sayers – Year 12’s Hollie Parker (17) has been selected to join the British Athletics Futures programme for young athletes with the potential to reach World Championship or Olympic standard.

The programme provides funding and support for the most talented athletes aged between 17 and 20, ensuring that Hollie will get the best possible opportunity to realise her ambition to compete at Olympic level.

Head of Athletics at King’s Ely, Richard Powell, said: “Hollie is currently ranked seventh in the UK for the 800 metres. If she continues to work hard and make progress, she will remain on the programme for two or three years and, in that time, will hopefully be selected for national athletic squads and teams.”

Hollie’s next competitive event for King’s Ely will be at the Cambridgeshire Schools’ Cross Country Championships, which is being held at the school on the morning of Saturday, January 18. She will also be taking part in the Sainsbury’s British Athletics Indoor Championships in February.
