OLD Elean, Goldie Sayers, the British women’s javelin record-holder, booked her place in the GB team for the London Olympics with her first competitive throw of the season on Saturday.

She threw 62.18m, easily her best-ever season opener, and comfortably over the 61m Olympic qualifying ‘A standard’ distance.

The competition was the first to be held at Loughborough’s new throwing

area and was an unofficial trials for the European Winter Throws Cup in Montenegro on 18 March.

London 2012 will be Goldie’s third Olympic Games. She was the youngest female member of the GB track and field team in Athens in 2004 and in Beijing in 2008 she set a new British record of 65.75m which placed her fourth and only 38cm behind the bronze medallist.
