PUPILS in King’s Ely Junior achieved more success in the Junior Mathematical Olympiad and Junior Mathematical Kangaroo.

Following the Junior Maths Challenge results, Matthew Danes (Year 7), Thomas Kim (Year 8) and Jose Alarcon Garcia Ramos (Year 8) qualified for the Junior Kangaroo.  Eleanor MacGillivray who is currently in Year 7 and obtained the best score in the Junior Maths Challenge, qualified for the Junior Mathematical Olympiad.

About 1200 students sat the Junior Mathematical Olympiad. The top 300 students receive a distinction, with medals awarded according to the quality of their answers.  Eleanor managed to be part of this group and she has been awarded a bronze medal together with a distinction. This is a massive achievement coupled with the fact that Eleanor is still in year 7 and therefore she was competing with year 8 for this reward.

About 5300 students sat the Junior Kangaroo. The top 25% receive a merit certificate. Both Thomas and Jose achieved this reward, with Matthew losing out by a few marks. Thomas and Jose will go on to try the Intermediate Challenge next year, but Eleanor and Matthew will have another go at the Junior Maths Challenge.

Audrienne Bezzina, Head of KS3 Mathematics at King’s Ely Junior, commented: “I am very pleased with this result, which has been the best ever obtained by King’s Ely.”
