FORTY King’s Ely Junior pupils are celebrating this week after winning 14 gold, 17 silver and 9 bronze medals in the UK Junior Maths Challenge.

Over 240,000 pupils from across the UK sat the challenge, with roughly the top 6% receiving a gold certificate, 13% receiving silver and the next 21% receiving bronze. In total, 50 Year 7 and 8 students from King’s Ely Junior took part in the challenge, which means 80% of the students who sat the test achieved at least a bronze.

The best two results were obtained by Rachel Foster, who achieved the highest score in Year 7, and Rebecca Garrett, who achieved the best results in Year 8 and the school as a whole.

“Our success this year is outstanding,” commented Audrienne Bezzina, Head of Key Stage 3 Maths, adding: “The result is even better than last year’s, when 74% of students received a bronze. In fact, the number of gold has risen from 6 to 14, which equates to 35% of the students sitting the challenge!”
