LOVE is in the air at King’s Ely this February and the Senior students have been hiring the school’s close harmony group to sing to their Valentines.

In return for a £3 donation to charity, the King’s Ely Barbers have serenaded scores of students with romantic renditions of popular love songs on behalf of their admirers. Even some of the staff received a song, thanks largely to the Barbers’ director, Peter North, who is Head of Vocal Studies at the school.

The Sixth Form singers, who are all former Ely Cathedral Choristers, also surprised members of the Ely Cathedral Girls’ Choir (ECGC) after the school’s morning service in the cathedral.

Mr North said: “The Barbers started the Valentines singing last February and were such a success that the students asked them to return for a second year. With such close links to Ely Cathedral and the boys’ and girls’ choirs, singing is an essential part of life at King’s Ely, so it is no surprise that the Barbers have been the talk of the school all week.”

The money raised will be donated to a selection of local and national charities, including Action for Children.
