BUDDING politicians at King’s Ely Senior paid a visit to the Cambridge Union to hear former Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg speak.

The evening was hosted by Heffers and chaired by the President of Lucy Cavendish College, Jackie Ashley, a political journalist and broadcaster for the last 30 years.

AS Level and A Level Government and Politics students from King’s Ely Senior, as well as some A Level History pupils, attended the Union event.

Head of Government and Politics at King’s Ely Senior, Andy Thomas, who is also Director of Boarding, said: “The former Deputy Prime Minister and Leader of the Liberal Democrats offered some real insight into working with the Conservatives in Government, as well as illuminating the background to the tuition fees scandal. Of course Brexit was also prominent and whatever your views, what he said did make a lot of sense. We were all aware that Donald Trump had been voted in as the next President of the United States. Here too, instead of picking up the rhetoric of the press, Clegg focused on the reasons why we were seeing voting patterns change in America, Britain and quite possibly in Europe in the forthcoming leadership elections in France, Holland and Germany. This was a thoroughly enjoyable evening. Areas he touched on were pertinent to our students and we hope will have inspired them to look deeper into the topics they are studying.”
