YOUNG rowers from King’s Ely are celebrating this week after winning the Ball Cup South Regatta on the Olympic course at Dorney Lake in Windsor last weekend.
King’s Ely beat 34 other schools and clubs from the southern half of the UK in the high profile event, which aims to give intermediate rowers the opportunity to compete against each other on a multi-lane course.
David Bercow set a high standard from the start, winning a bronze medal in his J16 single event early on in the day. This was then overshadowed by the J13 ‘A’ coxed quad consisting of Tom Oldham, Freddy Scott, Edmund Dickens and Jamie Stiff, with Sabby Ray coxing, which stormed to victory to win the school’s first gold.
Results came thick and fast through the day with Max Openshaw and James Bridgeman winning the J15 double, and Phoebe Bradbury, Lucie Clift, Katherine Wege and Libby Milne from Isle of Ely taking gold in the WJ16 coxless quad. Silver medals came from a J13 double of Freddy Scott and Edmund Dickens, J15 single of Max Openshaw and WJ16 single of Phoebe Bradbury.
The J13 ‘B’ coxed quad of George Ignarski, Rory Bates, Gabriel Coulter and Will Topping, with Harriet Parris coxing, settled for fourth position after being pipped on the line. The girls J13 coxed quad, which included Isla Taylor, Carolina Girones, Eve Noble and Izzy Parris, with sister Harriet Parris coxing, also showed great promise, qualifying for the final and eventually finishing sixth overall.
King’s Ely rowing coach Liam smith said: “All 38 athletes from King’s Ely put on a fantastic performance.
“All in all it was a very successful day and thanks must go to the parents and coaches who were there to encourage and help athletes get on and off of the water.”
