A ‘row-athon’ is being held here at King’s on Saturday, March 9th to support our Hope4Malawi fundraising appeal.

Yanki Ertem, Mollie Chamberlain, Elizabeth Boutwood and other King’s Ely Boat Club members are organising the ‘Row4Malawi’ event.

The team’s mission is to row 560 kilometres – the approximate length of Lake Malawi – continuously across three erg machines in our Old Palace Gymnasium. They will be starting at around 6am and will not stop until they have achieved the distance, which they estimate will take around 14 hours.

All members of our school community can support the challenge in two ways – by rowing on the day and/or sponsoring the team!

Yanki said: “Everyone is welcome to get involved! You do not need to have any previous rowing experience or a high level of fitness. Although it is a whole day event, participants can row for as long or as little as they wish. Whatever people can squeeze into their busy schedules would be greatly appreciated. Snacks will be provided throughout the day and we promise it will be a fun experience!”

All funds raised will go towards our campaign to raise £20,000 to build a new classroom at our link school in Malawi, through the Hope4Malawi charity. The fantastic news is that we are already half way to achieving this target, with our fundraising total now at over £10,000!

In a country where only 15% of children complete secondary school, this new classroom will have a significant impact on the local community. By providing access to education, we want to help families rise out of poverty and break the cycle of hardship, where many people survive on only £1 a day.
