MICHAEL Newman, Head of Chemistry at King’s Ely Senior, has come up with a fun way to raise funds for Osmond House’s charity, PAPYRUS Prevention of Young Suicide.

Mr Newman has purchased 40 marrow seeds – all from the same source (Wilko in Ely!) – and is encouraging people of all ages to try and grow the heaviest marrow they can this summer.

All you have to do to take part is visit his Justgiving link, make a donation of £4 and Mr Newman will then deliver you (somehow!) one marrow seed.

He said: “Suicide is the biggest killer of young people under the age of 35 in the UK – in 2018 over 1,800 young people took their own lives. PAPYRUS provides confidential support and advice to young people struggling with thoughts of suicide, and anyone worried about a young person through their helpline, HOPELINEUK.

“The marrow weigh-in date will be in late September. The person with the heaviest marrow will win £40, bragging rights and lots of courgettes! Happy growing everyone!”
