My goodness, Science Week at King’s Ely Acremont Nursery and Pre-Prep was a feast of fun!

Science is obviously a major part of our early years curriculum, and is explored on a daily basis at Acremont House through learning and play. However, our ‘Let’s take a moment of Science’ programme, organised specially by our Science Coordinator, Victoria Walker, took age-appropriate STEM to a whole new level.

The theme was ‘Light and Dark’, and children in Nursery 1 through to Year 2 unleashed their investigative, experimental and observational skills throughout the week.

Activities and themes included shadow light, chromatography, nocturnal animals, refraction, rainbows, sunlight photography, firework displays and more.

A highlight was when Ned Kittoe, Head of Science at King’s Ely Senior, visited Acremont House to talk to the children a little bit about atoms. He likened each atom to a tiny solar system, with the nucleus as the sun and electron ‘planets’ whizzing around it. Mr Kittoe then showed the children what happens to various metal salts when heat is applied – with some very beautiful results. Our budding scientists were amazed to see different coloured flames as each salt burned and released light!
