A GROUP of our Senior Rowers competed in Huntingdon Boat Club’s Head of the River Race on October 17th – King’s Ely Boat Club’s first head race since February last year!

Thirty-two students in Years 10-13 took on the 3,400-metre course.

Craig Ward, our Head of Rowing, said: “The course proved to be challenging, with several sharp bends testing all the crews’ steering under racing conditions.

“In Division 1, our Senior Doubles and Year 11 Quads raced well, with the Doubles of Conall Comley and Will Buckingham, and Annie Moore and Mia Gray picking up the fastest Boys and Girls Doubles’ times of the day.

“The Year 11 Boys and Girls Quads both raced solidly, finishing 5th and 20th respectively out of 51 crews in the overall standings. Congratulations to Year 12 student, Emily Morris, for completing her first race for King’s alongside Stephanie Watson.

“Division 2 saw the turn of our Year 10s, who experienced their first ever head race! The Boys Quad of Yanki Ertem, Cole Flatman, John Standley and Leo Good was expertly steered by James Warren to finish 20th, beating two other crews in their category.

“The Girls Quad of Abigail Biggs, Pippa Giles, Tara Nathan and Mary Garrod had an excellent race, and the Girls Double of Aoife G and Indigo Flatman took the race in their stride, steering a tricky course well and picking up good experience.

“The Senior Boys Quad of Dan Millard, Conall Comley, Will Buckingham and Jonny Iles had their goal of recording the fastest time of the day thwarted by a rogue cruiser heading up stream causing them to come to a full stop. Despite this, the boys recorded the second fastest time of the day! The division was rounded up by Robbie Allan taking the course in a single; the toughest discipline. Robbie raced hard, narrowly missing the category win.

“A special mention must go to Ed Petre-Firth for coxing both the Year 11 Boys and Year 10 Girls back-to-back in both divisions.

“Our next race is Bedford Head on October 24th.”
