In January 2019, for the first ever time, auditions for all chorister places in Ely Cathedral Choir – both boys and girls – were held on the same day. The next Voice Trials is likely to take place in January 2020, however choristership enquiries are of course welcome all year round.

Membership of a Cathedral Choir is probably the best musical training a child can have, and Ely is proud to offer this opportunity to both girls and boys. The choristers sing daily in the magnificent surroundings of the Cathedral, and all are educated at King’s Ely, receiving a scholarship which pays a generous proportion of their fees. Boys join the Cathedral Choir in years Years 3 to 5. Girls join in Years 7 to 9.

You can find much more information about chorister life here (boys) and here (girls)

What does the audition day involve?

The day includes a short and relaxed audition with the choir’s director and music staff from the school. There is a chance to visit the boarding houses and tour King’s Ely, and parents of candidates meet the key school and Cathedral personnel. Candidates who do not already attend King’s also undertake assessments which vary depending on which section of the school they are applying to enter.

What are you looking for?

We are looking for potential, rather than a fully trained singer! Enthusiasm, a good musical ear and a clear natural voice are the most important things. We also look for reasonable concentration and reading skills, and a supportive family.
