KING’S Ely girls stole the plaudits at the Isle of Ely Cross Country Championships last week.

As well as providing the individual winners of all the girls’ races, King’s Ely saw 16 girls qualify for the next round – the Cambridgeshire Schools’ Championships, which will be held in January next year. Pride of place goes to the Minor Girls’ team, where six of the school’s runners finished in the first nine places.

Rebecca Daniel and Hollie Parker, King’s Ely’s nationally ranked athletes, both won their races comfortably. Claudia Law was back on top form and Molly Jones looks to have a bright future.

There were also some encouraging performances from the boys, with the likes of Callum Hall, Owen Cole and Simon Kumar achieving good times. Oliver Hutchinson lost one of his running shoes on the first lap and ran the next two laps with only one shoe, displaying real determination.

“King’s Ely runners represented the school admirably,” commented Richard Powell, Head of Athletics, adding: “The Cambridgeshire Schools’ Championships will be tougher, but, with the right training over the next two months, King’s Ely should see some qualifiers for the Anglian Championships, and possibly the Nationals too.”
