IT WAS a golden day for King’s Ely athletes on Saturday (12) when the KE team won 19 medals at the Cambridgeshire Athletic Association Championships in Peterborough.

Students from King’s Ely Junior and Senior took home 11 gold medals as well as six silver and two bronze, setting a new record for the school.

Out of the 26 athletes who took part, pride of place goes to the three double gold medal winners: Freia Gould, Millie Oddi and Rasul Mohsumov. All three had to dig deep to win their events against tough opposition, two of whom were competing against older athletes.

Freia successfully defended her Cambridge Athletic Association Under 13s High Jump title with a jump of 1m 30cm as well as taking gold in the Discus. In the Under 17s, Rasul also claimed victory in the Discus with a remarkable throw of 33m 65cm. He then went on to win a second gold medal in the Shot, throwing a distance of 12m 43cm. Millie took the top spot in Triple Jump and Long Jump for the Under 15s, with a 9m 39cm jump in the Triple and 4m 31cm in the Long Jump.

Head of Athletics, Richard Powell said: “The school is delighted with the commitment, ability and attitude shown on the day and would like to congratulate all of the students who took part. All King’s Ely athletes put in excellent performances, including those who did not win a medal.

“The results are particularly impressive because of the wet weather the country has been having, which has made training for some athletic events very difficult.”
