Students in Hill House, which is one of our Senior Girls’ Boarding Houses, prepared and served up an amazing Chinese New Year Feast!

Sharon Jackson, Housemistress of Hill House, said: “The festivities in House were all student-led, with a large team planning the menu, purchasing the food, and then cooking and serving it to 18 students. The team were ably led by Susan, Amber and Aimee, whose culinary skills were amazing. The girls were determined to cook a traditional Chinese New Year Feast and what a feast they produced!

“Susan and Amber were exacting in picking out the correct ingredients, and insisting that a whole range of different dishes were produced. Aimee taught us how to make dumplings, although she did rather give up on my poor efforts! There was a brilliant atmosphere in the kitchen as Catherine, Kiki, Judy, Carmen, Angel, Phiona, Charli, Piao and Sayuri joined in to cook the meal, which took most of the day.

“In the evening, the girls sat down to eat what was the most delicious meal and to celebrate the Chinese New Year. We were taught some Chinese traditions and learnt some key expressions. I gave each of the girls a traditional ‘red letter’, although they were rather dismayed to find that rather than money, the letters contained tuck tokens! It truly was a magical evening; this is exactly what boarding life is all about.”

Chinese New Year 2023 is the Year of the Rabbit. People who are born in the Year of the Rabbit are said to be clever, compassionate, and generous. Year of the Rabbit babies were born in 1927, 1939, 1951, 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999, 2011, or 2023.

We have lots of Chinese New Year events and activities happening in school, which are involving pupils and staff from Nursery right the way through to Sixth Form!
