Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate’s life for me!

All things pirates proved to be a very creative learning and play focus for our Nursery Two children last week. It all began on the Monday morning (January 9th), when some of the children suggested to Nursery Practitioner, Lucy Hunt, how fun it would be to build a pirate ship…

Mrs Hunt said: “We used teamwork, lots of thinking skills, and our strong muscles to collect items from around the playground to use to construct our very own pirate galleon!

“The role play games that have occurred each time we have been outside have been wonderful to witness! Following the children’s ongoing interest in pirates has inspired lots of other activities too, such as making and decorating origami pirate hats and telescopes; following a treasure map to where ‘X’ marks the spot; playing treasure-inspired Maths games where the children have to try and get as many real coins into their treasure chests as they can; and by reading lots of facts about real pirates.

“We have decided that we would love the excitement of finding treasure and sailing the high seas, but that we do not really fancy eating turtles, rotten meat, or hardtack biscuits, which often had weevils or other insects living inside them!”
