“Today’s Remembrance Service in the Cathedral was a dignified and respectful occasion for the school community to share. Your children’s behaviour and general approach to our gathering illustrated how super their manners and behaviour can be. I was proud of them for presenting such an appropriate impression of the school and themselves. Our Heads of House placed crosses at the school’s war memorial near to the Hayward Theatre and played their part in the service itself. All of us, however many times we have witnessed it before, were touched by the sight of thousands of poppy leaves falling from the Octagon in a contemplative silence.

“Next week, we have a number of special days and themes to consider in PSHE, assemblies and with Tutors. It is National Anti-Bullying Week, Road Safety Awareness Week and then BBC Children in Need ends the week on Friday. To mark our involvement in those initiatives, we are inviting the children to wear odd socks on Monday November 14th, design road safety posters, and wear spotty accessories on Friday November 18th in return for a suggested minimum donation of £2 for Children in Need.

“However, there is more afoot than those well publicised national initiatives! Along with the thousands of poppies we have worn this week, the colour red appeared all over our computer screens and on displays throughout the school. Were we REDDY? The school soon established that the “Are you REDDY?” And “Get REDDY!” publicity around us related to a whole of King’s Ely drive to become more environmentally aware and reduce our waste of energy – Ready to Reduce each Day! Lights are already being switched off speedily when not required and radiators have been turned down whilst the weather is so warm. The children are learning about ways in which we can think cleverly to improve our carbon footprint and this is sure to be a long-term initiative at school. Keep a look out for more news from this initiative over the coming weeks.

“Next week’s special days will be fun but have important underlying messages at heart, and so we will look forward to all the odd socks and spots we will see whilst, at the same time, we focus on the learning within.

“We send our best wishes for the weekend ahead.”
